About the House
Founded by Céline Vipiana in Paris in 1945 as a children's shoe shop, the house expanded to women's ready-to-wear in 1960. Phoebe Philo led 2008-2018, defining a decade of quiet-luxury tailoring — the Trapeze, Luggage and Belt bags. Hedi Slimane took over in 2018, dropping the accent from the logo, refocusing the house around French bourgeois codes, the Triomphe canvas, the Ava bag and a slim menswear silhouette. Michael Rider, formerly of Polo Ralph Lauren and a Philo-era Celine alum, took creative direction in late 2024. Owned by LVMH.
Markdown Pattern
Celine does not discount on its own e-commerce and does not authorise broad third-party stockists. Ready-to-wear, shoes and small leather goods appear at limited Saks, Bergdorf and Mytheresa allocations during designer markdowns — 30-40% in late June and late December, 50% on shoes mid-July and mid-January. The Triomphe canvas, Ava, Cuir Triomphe and Classic Box bags hold near-full price through authorised channels. Authentic Slimane-era Celine bags carry a heat-stamp inside reading 'CELINE Paris' (no accent) with a separate serial on a sewn-in tag. Philo-era pieces carry 'CÉLINE Paris' with the accent and a similar serial structure. Triomphe canvas alignment is exact across seams. Cuir Triomphe metal closures are weighty solid brass with crisp negative space. Hand-stitched edges on the Classic Box are even at five stitches per centimetre. Counterfeit Box bags typically show uneven box-stiffness corners.

Department-store designer sales in mid-July and mid-January are the only authorised markdown windows — selection is shallow on bags, deeper on shoes and ready-to-wear. The strongest buying moment for Philo-era archive is the secondary market in autumn, when collectors trade up; pre-loved Trapeze and Phantom Cabas pricing tightens through November as resale demand builds.
